The fundamental aspect of our research involves understanding the sustenance, adaptation, and evolution of microorganisms in versatile environments. Our research vision centers on uncovering the mechanisms of sustenance, adaptation, and evolution of microorganisms in extreme environments. By exploring the fundamental principles governing microbial diversity and adaptation under extreme conditions, our work has broad implications for understanding the origin of life, microbial evolution, and the potential for life beyond Earth. One of the environments that we focus on is deep biosphere. Dutta Geomicrobiology Lab is involved in IODP and ICDP expeditions. Dutta Lab is taking part in IODP3–NSF Expedition 501. The research work focuses on microbial community dynamics and biogeochemical processes across salinity gradients in the freshwater–saltwater transition zones of the New England Shelf.
