Discover Geomicrobiology - A Dutta Geomicrobiology Lab initiative

Discover Geomicrobiology aims to engage students and community members in learning how microorganisms shape Earth’s environments and influence environmental health. The program introduces key concepts in geomicrobiology through accessible discussions, laboratory demonstrations, and interactive activities connecting microbes with minerals, soils, water, contaminants, and biogeochemical processes. Our vision is to inspire diverse learners to explore geomicrobiology, connect fundamental discovery with environmental solutions, strengthen scientific literacy, and empower communities to protect Earth’s future through collaboration.

Reflecting the research mission of the Dutta Geomicrobiology Lab, the program integrates both fundamental and applied geomicrobiology. The fundamental component explores microbial life in extreme and relatively unexplored environments, microbial adaptation and evolution, the origin and limits of life, and the possibility of life in extraterrestrial environments. Participants are also introduced to modern research approaches, including multi-omics, bioinformatics, data mining, and artificial intelligence, used to understand microbial roles in Earth systems.

The applied component demonstrates how fundamental knowledge of microbial processes can help address environmental and resource-related challenges. Examples include the bioremediation of emerging contaminants, microbial biomining and critical-metal recovery from waste streams, AI-guided environmental systems, water-quality assessment, and the use of microbial and geochemical indicators to evaluate ecosystem health, contamination risks, and natural resources. By connecting scientific discovery with real-world environmental solutions, Discover Geomicrobiology seeks to inspire curiosity, strengthen science literacy, and encourage future participation in environmental, biological, and Earth sciences.

Biomining

Biomining is an environmentally friendly approach that uses microorganisms to recover valuable metals from ores, mine wastes, and other metal-rich materials. Certain bacteria and fungi can interact with minerals by producing acids, enzymes, or organic compounds that help dissolve metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements. Compared with traditional mining methods, biomining can require less energy, generate fewer harsh chemical wastes, and provide a sustainable way to recover metals from low-grade ores or waste streams. This process highlights the important role of microbes in developing cleaner technologies for resource recovery and supporting a more circular economy. Biomining broadly refers to the use of biological systems to recover valuable metals from ores, mine wastes, and metal-rich environments. While the term is most commonly used for microbially mediated metal extraction, it can also be connected to phytomining, where metal-accumulating plants are used to take up metals from soils or mine wastes. Together, microbial biomining and phytomining represent sustainable bio-based approaches for metal recovery, waste valorization, and circular resource use.
